The Four Unicorns of the Gaypocalypse
A personal blog. Sometimes I make GIFs.
Everyday I’m introduced to something educational on Tumblr. This is an example. If you’d like to see this video, click here.
This woman is great!
I’m sure her heart is in a good place, but aggression and hateful language has never created any kind of understanding, whether on the right or wrong side of an argument.
Please don’t tone-argument this post.
Jane Elliott is straight-up mean to blue-eyed people for the duration of this workshop. Not because she’s a mean person, but to show the kind of treatment that people of color regularly experience from white authority figures whom they can’t just tell to be nicer.
And it works, because yes, aggressive arguments can and often do facilitate understanding—especially for third parties. Thousands of people have learned from watching this workshop. Quiet, conciliatory activism with rounded edges has its place, but it is not the only way, as this workshop has shown.
“When am I going to quit? When racists quit. Do I have a job for a lifetime? I’m afraid so.” She looks so sad. :/
When they get called out, that’s always one of the first things said: “it’s not about race”
