Critical..."

“Of course, there is nothing inherently elitist about reason or the scientific method. Critical thinking involves applying a few simple rules that are accessible to everyone, at least in theory. And indeed, a lot of people become skeptics for the best of intentions: to spread the word of reason and critical thinking, to arm the masses rather than shoot them down. In highlighting bunk and deception wherever it occurs, their aim is to protect the vulnerable against the hucksters, charlatans, politicians and priests who exploit them.

But such is the character of skepticism that good intentions quickly get swamped by bad ones. Look past the crocodile tears on any online debunking forum, and you’ll quickly find that the majority of visitors are not drawn there by concern for the victims of irrationality, but by contempt. They’re there to laugh at idiots. I’m not going to plead innocence here: I’ve often joined in with the laughter, at least vicariously; laughing at idiots can be fun. But in the context of skeptic sites, the laughter takes on a bullying and unhealthy tone. It’s never pleasant to watch a group of university graduates ganging up to sneer at people denied their advantages in life, especially when for some of them it’s a full-time hobby. It’s an unfair fight between unequal resources, and far too few skeptics care about this inequality or want to do anything about it.”

-
Stephen Bond, “Why I Am No Longer a Skeptic” (via wretchedoftheearth)

i feel this very deeply. the emphasis i used to put on logic and just “rightness” in general embarrasses me like few other things. i think that taking (and getting an a in) philosophy of logical thinking cemented that pretty firmly. i know that skeptic in this context is tied to religious skepticism (which in itself is ~illogical~ in that it assumes religious people aren’t skeptical and that there is no critical thinking in having faith which lmao) but just in general you know those people who have memorized the names of logical fallacies to pull them out in every day conversations, and are they ever people you’re jazzed to be around? even at the height of my sam harris reading i dreaded being around people who i perceived to be worse than me about that. so anyway yeah, i like this.

cannibaljackrabbit:

gaypocalypse:

the phrase “assimilation ≠ liberation” is reasonable enough in a vacuum. but what does it mean when you put “assimilation ≠ liberation” on a glitter background and post it on tumblr in the “queers” and “femmes” tags? what are you saying and to whom?

if you feel the need to do that it is probably because you think that some lgbt people are engaging in “assimilation” by acting or thinking in ways you don’t approve of, and that they need to be told, by you, that those things are counterproductive to their liberation. what does “assimilation” look like? here are some practices commonly criticized by self-described “radical queers” as “assimilationist”:

being monogamous

wanting to marry or otherwise formally commit to a monogamous partner and gain legal protections for such a partnership

wanting to have children within the context of such a partnership

presenting in a masculine way, especially as a woman, despite significant social pressure not to from straight society

wanting to be seen as normal and good by society

otherwise having ordinary hopes and expectations for yourself and your life, rather than overhauling those hopes and expectations in favor of a countercultural, “queer” lifestyle simply because you are lgbt

so to these people, or to whichever people the word “assimilationist” conjures in your head, you say: “those things won’t liberate you, you know!”

is that really a respectful way to treat a member of your community who has not wronged you?

does it occur to you that people might do those things because they feel authentically right for them, not out of some politically impure desire to assimilate? do you realize that deliberately divesting themselves of these things for the sake of anti-assimilation will also not liberate them? can you see that holding lgbt people to a special set of expectations specifically because they are lgbt is actually a form of homo- and transphobia in and of itself?

glitter is not liberation, either.

I wasn’t going to be rude, but I’ve got 1 rude thing to say and then I promise I’m going to be logical and converse with you.

FUCK OFF, GLITTER *IS* A FORM OF LIBERATION.

For some, anyway. And there is nothing wrong with that. It’s hypocrital to be all “let the assimilationists/ homonormative people live their lives without stigma” and then stigmatize radqueers love of glitter.

I don’t personally ID as a radqueer, although I am queer, trans*, and totally rad. hurr hurrr. Ok, I’ll talk seriously now.

A+ don’t critique the lifestyle of people who find heteronormative timelines fulfilling as queer/gay/LGBTQ+ people. A+!

~*BUT*~ let’s not forget that there *is* a lot of heteronormative indoctrination we all experience socially etc. etc. and it’s important that we analyze our seemingly original ideas about homo/heteronormativity whether we know what the word means or not. A lot of times we are led to believe a system works for us when it doesn’t, particularly because that system caters to non-queer/non-LGBTQ+ people and barely works for cis-hets as is.

I’m really just pointing out that the social expectations are kind of caca before us queers started “liberation” movements, or whatever you want to call “living in ways that make us comfortable as queers” this year.

Being queer or subversive isn’t always about purposely deviance in a way to say “FUCK YOU” to the man, ya know. It’s about visibility. And each person’s idea of what liberation is varies. This is ok and A+.

We should not police the empowering methods people use unless they harm others.

Oh and the ways in which queer persons maintain heteronormative timelines (babies and such) is already altered in ways that make it an even unintentional act of queer liberation. Actually, probably not that word. More like queer empowerment and visibility. Anyway, it benefits the community, but we can’t ignore the fact that we have to do some “typical” things in our own ways (because laws are butt heads).

Also, your use of the word “ordinary” is problematic because, again, that term is subjective. But basically, I agree with you, but let us take into account the things I listed above.

it’s weird, but telling i guess, that you assume that by saying “glitter is not liberation, either” (note the ‘either’; the point is that it’s not liberation if living a happily married gay life isn’t) i must be “stigmatiz[ing] radqueers love of glitter.” i hope you’re being less than serious because that’s just silly. i shouldn’t feel like i have to say this but i actually like glitter? i own like 246378 glitter nail polishes and they make me happy? glitter is fun and neat-o? and yet i still think radiqueers who think glitter will liberate them while shitting on “assimilationists” for not being liberated enough are wrong. that and whether it’s ok to love glitter are separate issues.

but no, even if i were doing that, it wouldn’t be hypocritical because liking glitter isn’t actually comparable to the things on my list. if i make fun of glitter, i’m making fun of a fashion choice, but insulting someone because the way they organize their family isn’t radical enough is insulting something at the core of their life. just saying.

and no, i am also not saying “let the assimilationists/ homonormative people live their lives without stigma” because i think it is presumptuous and extremely disrespectful to call people “assimilationists”/”homonormative” in the first place. especially since, in my experience, radiqueers often adopt this kind of posture to avoid examining their own susceptibility to societal pressures and complicity in misogyny, classism, racism, etc. by scapegoating “assimilationists” for these things.

if you assume that you know what works for you but people you see as “assimilationist” don’t (especially given that MANY people with these “assimilationist” traits are not the stereotypical rich white men you might imagine), you are disrespecting them, and if you are working from fundamentally disrespectful assumptions about a large part of the lgbt community, you are not contributing positively to any discourse around queer liberation.

i’m glad we don’t disagree wholly but it doesn’t seem to me like we’re going to come much closer to agreement on this.

ok…

so, like, you just argued against positions in which you think I have on things (rich, white, gay men? when did I go there?) and then critiqued me for using language you used in order to keep consistent (“assimilationist”).

So… idk read it again?

my point wrt rich white men was not that you personally must have some specific assumption there but that critiques of “assimilation” are quite often justified by claims that the “assimilationists” are privileged which is not a fair assumption but which often comes up in these discussions and is relevant to my critique of this rhetoric

i critiqued people for naming and attacking what they see as “assimilationists,” carefully avoiding using that term in any way that would suggest i endorsed it. your critique was unclear in that way, as well as introducing new synonyms, discussing “heteronormative timelines” without scare quotes, etc., which made me think we disagreed there and that there may have been misunderstanding about my stance.

cannibaljackrabbit:

"I think the word ‘feminist’ has been polluted, horribly. I raised my daughter as a feminist, and she won’t identify as one, because the word has been so fucking polluted by boomer media in the sense that it means that you’re ugly, or you’re fat, or you’re a lesbian—nothing wrong with being all three of those things—and every time I read an article in the mainstream media, it’s like, ‘Feminism’s dead! Dead! Dead, I tell you! Dead!’ And I’m like, No, it’s really not—not in me. Do I believe in feminism? Of course I do, I’m a fucking feminist. Do I believe that there are a lot of us out there? No. I really don’t.”

-
Courtney Love for Bust, 2013 (via rocknrollwitches)

um, did she just say that the media polluted the word feminist by associating it with ugly, fat, and lesbian women? ~not that there’s anything wrong with that!~ (because as we all know, that catchphrase absolves you of all responsibility for your words) but no wonder no one wants to associate with feminism, because… gross.

yeah i’m sort of in the process of switching now. i don’t want to, but firefox has become the biggest rudest cpu hog ever. and it locks up every time i try to quit.

mozilla hasn’t this version inflation gone too far

i remember waiting sooo long for firefox 4…

you don’t have to destroy your entire preestablished version numbering system just to compete with chrome, i guarantee you no one who is clueless enough to think “omg firefox is in version 8 and chrome is in version 26 or whatever, chrome must be WAY MORE ADVANCED!” has any clue what versions they’re in anyway, you’re pandering to a market segment that doesn’t even exist
