i feel this very deeply. the emphasis i used to put on logic and just “rightness” in general embarrasses me like few other things. i think that taking (and getting an a in) philosophy of logical thinking cemented that pretty firmly. i know that skeptic in this context is tied to religious skepticism (which in itself is ~illogical~ in that it assumes religious people aren’t skeptical and that there is no critical thinking in having faith which lmao) but just in general you know those people who have memorized the names of logical fallacies to pull them out in every day conversations, and are they ever people you’re jazzed to be around? even at the height of my sam harris reading i dreaded being around people who i perceived to be worse than me about that. so anyway yeah, i like this.

if you feel the need to do that it is probably because you think that some lgbt people are engaging in “assimilation” by acting or thinking in ways you don’t approve of, and that they need to be told, by you, that those things are counterproductive to their liberation. what does “assimilation” look like? here are some practices commonly criticized by self-described “radical queers” as “assimilationist”:

being monogamous

wanting to marry or otherwise formally commit to a monogamous partner and gain legal protections for such a partnership

wanting to have children within the context of such a partnership

presenting in a masculine way, especially as a woman, despite significant social pressure not to from straight society

wanting to be seen as normal and good by society

otherwise having ordinary hopes and expectations for yourself and your life, rather than overhauling those hopes and expectations in favor of a countercultural, “queer” lifestyle simply because you are lgbt

so to these people, or to whichever people the word “assimilationist” conjures in your head, you say: “those things won’t liberate you, you know!”

is that really a respectful way to treat a member of your community who has not wronged you?

does it occur to you that people might do those things because they feel authentically right for them, not out of some politically impure desire to assimilate? do you realize that deliberately divesting themselves of these things for the sake of anti-assimilation will also not liberate them? can you see that holding lgbt people to a special set of expectations specifically because they are lgbt is actually a form of homo- and transphobia in and of itself?

glitter is not liberation, either.

~*BUT*~ let’s not forget that there *is* a lot of heteronormative indoctrination we all experience socially etc. etc. and it’s important that we analyze our seemingly original ideas about homo/heteronormativity whether we know what the word means or not. A lot of times we are led to believe a system works for us when it doesn’t, particularly because that system caters to non-queer/non-LGBTQ+ people and barely works for cis-hets as is.

I’m really just pointing out that the social expectations are kind of caca before us queers started “liberation” movements, or whatever you want to call “living in ways that make us comfortable as queers” this year.

Being queer or subversive isn’t always about purposely deviance in a way to say “FUCK YOU” to the man, ya know. It’s about visibility. And each person’s idea of what liberation is varies. This is ok and A+.

We should not police the empowering methods people use unless they harm others.

Oh and the ways in which queer persons maintain heteronormative timelines (babies and such) is already altered in ways that make it an even unintentional act of queer liberation. Actually, probably not that word. More like queer empowerment and visibility. Anyway, it benefits the community, but we can’t ignore the fact that we have to do some “typical” things in our own ways (because laws are butt heads).

Also, your use of the word “ordinary” is problematic because, again, that term is subjective. But basically, I agree with you, but let us take into account the things I listed above.

my point wrt rich white men was not that you personally must have some specific assumption there but that critiques of “assimilation” are quite often justified by claims that the “assimilationists” are privileged which is not a fair assumption but which often comes up in these discussions and is relevant to my critique of this rhetoric

i critiqued people for naming and attacking what they see as “assimilationists,” carefully avoiding using that term in any way that would suggest i endorsed it. your critique was unclear in that way, as well as introducing new synonyms, discussing “heteronormative timelines” without scare quotes, etc., which made me think we disagreed there and that there may have been misunderstanding about my stance.
