…Holy shit. I get it now.
I used to think that people’s misapprehension of “freedom of speech” as freedom from criticism was a simple lack of understanding of US civics.
But no — it’s that, because of whiteness (and some other things like cissexism and ableism, but mostly whiteness), they honestly and truly believe that their speech should not have consequences. They honestly and truly believe that they should be able to say whatever they want and that nobody else gets to complain, because that’s how it always works, right?
That’s it.
